Color Powder Portraits: Pro-Tips For Pro Results

Color Powder Portraits: Pro-Tips For Pro Results

The popularity of color powder has grown far beyond color runs, local festivities, and holiday traditions. In fact, it’s no secret among professional photographers that colored powder easily transforms a basic outdoor photo shoot into a magical afternoon of authentic smiles and good old-fashioned fun! So if you’re planning a family portrait session, we’ve got a few quick tips for successful shoots. The following guidelines apply to everyone behind the lens, from the seasoned camera professional to the enthusiastic smart-phone-a-grapher. Regardless of skill level, you’ll undoubtedly produce awesome results with our quick tips!

How Much Colored Powder Will You Need?

We suggest 50 Assorted Color Powder Packets. It’s plenty of powder for just about any sized family. Usually, the best results require 5-7 packets per family member. And you’ll likely have extra left over for future photo shoots and/or to wage a color war after the shoot.

Supporting Hands – Photo Shoots

Having an assistant on set will make everything easier. As the photographer, it’s challenging to throw powder and capture the shots at the same time! So if possible, recruit help in tossing the color packets. This also helps ensure the colors get tossed away from your gear. While a little powder shouldn’t hurt anything, it will cloud your lens and the rest of your shoot will have a dusty haze in every image. So… rally the troops and secure a tossing assistant!

Where and How to Toss Color Powder

Shoot outdoors with plenty of light. You’ll want to use a fast continuous shutter speed to capture the cloud of dust as it flies through the air. For those of you using smart-phones, utilize the burst mode to catch the quick sequence of images.

Safety First

Color powder is absolutely non-toxic, but it’s also not comfortable if you get it in your eyes… and it won’t taste delicious either. Just like any unwelcomed debris on your eyeballs, you can flush it with water or eye drops. But, water will put a literal damper on the color powder, so use it sparingly.

Creative Direction

Vibrant colors are really exciting. It’s like a visual sugar rush! No matter how old you are, there’s a degree of self-control required to not go rainbow-wild the minute it lands in your hands. So we suggest starting slow, curated, and with clear creative direction. Tell your family the vision and show images of what you want to create. Inspire everyone so they know how to participate together! That said, the best candid shots usually happen during the color-chaos portion of the shoot. So, eventually let everyone get crazy with it, and then watch the magic happen.

blue powder

Age Restriction?

Sure, age is just a number, but it’s something to consider. The kids featured in this shoot were two and five years old. While they had a lot of fun, their age determined what was possible to achieve as the photographer. Big brother was a total ham and spent most of the shoot trying to terrorize his twin sisters. The little girls were so mystified by the color that big brother’s antics didn’t faze them one bit – but they also were too busy to even bother smiling for the camera. But even though I couldn’t control everything, we still pulled off an awesome shoot with some winning memories and photos to prove it!

While the age of your subjects can sometimes redirect your creative vision, just keep it loose and stay open minded about what can happen when you just let the little ones play! It might just turn out better than you could have planned!

Color Powder Scavenger Hunt And Backyard Color War

Color Powder Scavenger Hunt And Backyard Color War

The kids are out of school! It’s fun and relaxing doing nothing for a few days but after that you’ve got to come up with some creative ideas for summer outdoor fun! A unique activity is to host a backyard color war! One way to extend this activity and get them excited, is to stage a scavenger hunt where they follow clues to find their color gear! So much more fun than just handing over the goods!

Color powder race kits from Color Blaze work great because they come with so much fun gears – tattoos, bracelets, t-shirts, colored powder packets and bulk color powder depending on how many you order.

color powder

It is simple, and easy to do, while extending the fun and have an additional unique colorful experience! We asked one of our resident moms to host her own and here is what she came up with:

Color Powder Tools and Supplies

color powder race kits

The supplies are pretty minimal. If you don’t want to go for the race kit you can just focus on these supplies.

  1. Color Powder Packet Sample Kit: For our scavenger hunt we just had 6 neighborhood kids so I used three sample packet kits which provide different powder shades and plenty of color war powder to fill the bottles. Each bottle was the standard 8 ounce size and required about 2.5 packets to fill completely. If you’ve got a bigger group you might want to just go ahead and order the 50 assorted color powder packets – it is only about $10 more and you get a TON more!
  2. Squeeze Bottles: These squeeze bottles are ideal for distributing more controlled amounts of powder. Draw pictures and even write words! Any soft plastic bottle will serve this project well- there are limitless options online. You could even recycle 20 ounce soda bottles and drill a hole in the cap! Use your imagination. You can sometimes find them at the dollar store or order online from a variety of vendors. Color Blaze carries the 24 ounce size if you want to go big!
  3. Sidewalk Chalk
  4. Treasure: The treasure can be anything from a special snack to a movie ticket! Get creative on this one. What might your kids want to find after the hunt!

The Setup | Colored Powder

She chose places where her and the kids spend time together and drew outlines of those places on the sidewalk around their home. Using sidewalk chalk from the dollar store, she kept the outlines simple. Those drawings directed the kids to actual locations where she hid a note with a handwritten clue sending the hunters to their next destination. Here are a couple of examples:

Treasure Hunt Showtime

She gave them each squeeze bottles to test and ensure they could make them work. Then explained that they were going on a treasure hunt! Along the way they would discover picture clues that needed their help by adding some extra color. Then, they searched for these places and found more clues that lead a prize! For example, the picture of the tree meant there was a clue in the tree. They found the clue, color in the tree outline with their colored powder and move onto the next clue.

Treasure Found!

They had such a fun time walking around the neighborhood, seeing things in new ways and discovering help from friends along the journey! When they found the rest of their gear at the top of the steps, they were so excited! This adventure simply built even more fun into an already amazing activity!

bulk color powder

Color War!

For the final event, each child was given a squeeze bottle full of color powder and let them go crazy in the backyard throwing powder on each other. Then when it’s all done, just turn on the sprinklers and clean up the kiddos and your lawn!

Successfully Promote Your Color Powder Event | Color Fun Run Fundraisers

fun run fundraising ideas

Successfully Promote Your Color Powder Event | Color Fun Run Fundraisers

Promoting a color fun run is one of the most important aspects to making it a fundraising success. If the community is not EXCITED about attending and joining the color fun run fundraiser for your cause, it doesn’t matter how much color powder you have, or how great the prizes are.

how to organize a run

Getting Started With Your Fundraiser

When to Start – Start promoting the event at least 3 months prior. As soon as you have the date and place secured and all of your permissions in place, start getting the word out there to make the parents, students and school staff aware of the event. As you get closer to the big day you can do weekly and then daily reminders and updates.

Where to Promote – Promoting your fundraising campaign to parents, students and staff is essential. If you can, use all of the elements listed below. Some people will only read the newsletter, others will only see it on social media, and some will see it everywhere! That’s ok – it just shows the community how important your fundraising campaign is.

color fun run fundraiser

Fun Run Fundraising Ideas | Know Where To Start

  • School Calendar – Make sure it is listed on the school calendar at least 3 months in advance
  • School Website – promote it on the school website on the home page and the activities/events page.
  • PTO Website – Add it to your PTO Calendar and events list. Also consider having an ad for it on your home page with a link to a specific menu page with detailed information regarding the event.
  • Social Media – Post it on the PTO and/or School Facebook and other social media pages.
Consider making a sticky post – that always stays at the top of the page with all of the main information. Create weekly posts about the race. Once you are about 2 weeks out you may want to do daily posts.
  • PTO Newsletter/Emails – If you have a weekly email that goes out to parents – make sure to include it EVERY single week. In the beginning you may be providing basic information – what, when, where, why etc. But each week you can add information to it – perhaps give them an update on why you need the funds – how is it going to benefit their child. Update them on the progress reaching the fundraising goal – perhaps include a goal thermometer in each email. Always make sure to include a link to where they can sign up.
  • School Bulletin Boards – Put flyers on school bulletin boards. Make sure the bulletin boards are in areas where students, staff and parents will see them. If you have a bulletin board that is in a high traffic area, see if you can make it a dedicated Color Fun Run Billboard running up to the event.
  • School Announcements – Make weekly announcements that the big day is coming up. Let students know how they can participate.
  • School Marquee – if you have a marquee or digital sign in front of your school make sure to post the event there.
  • Pickup/Drop off Line – this is an excellent place to capture parents attention. Have posters posted along the pick-up line. Have flyers available to hand out to parents as they are waiting in line. You can recruit student or parent volunteers to create and hold up signs promoting the Color Fun Run before and after school. They can make noise, create cheers etc.
  • Pep Rally – Hold a pep rally when you are ready to kick off the fundraising campaign. Some schools have held a pep rally outside and ordered sample color powder packets and thrown them on the principal or P.E. teacher. The kids love it and it gives them an idea of what they will experience at the Color Fun Run.
  • Other School Events – consider having the upcoming race announced at other school events. The orchestra concert, baseball game, etc. Ask if the announcer can make an announcement about it.
  • Neighborhood Schools – let your neighborhood schools know about the race as well. If you are in an elementary school, make the middle and high schoolers aware of your event – you never know who might want to participate or donate to your cause.
  • Local Community – if you are opening it to the local community, consider posting flyers at local businesses that are friendly to your school’s fundraising.
  • Sponsors – If you have local businesses sponsoring the event, ask them if they will put your event on their social media pages, website etc.

Getting the message out requires a multi-pronged approach. There’s no such thing as too much promotion!

Spread The News About The Color Fun Run Event

First, consider the basics – Who, What, Where, When and Why. If everyone understands the basic concept and purpose of your fundraising, they will be excited to attend and help you raise funds.

The first announcements in the beginning may be as simple as the event, the date, the place and time with information about how much you want to raise and what the funds will be used for. The posters, flyers and bulletin boards can keep the information simple as well.

In letters addressed to parents, email blasts, and social media posts, you can start giving out more information. What is a Color Fun Run? What is the objective and goal of the fundraiser?

Be specific –are you raising funds for a  new science lab or P.E. equipment?  Let them know how it will benefit the school and the students. People are much more likely to rally behind a cause if they understand it.

Consider weekly updates. As you get closer to the race day, you can send daily reminders on how much time is left to register and fundraise as well as give updates on how you are doing to date.

What To Include In Your Race Kits | Color Fun Run For Charity

Kids covered from head to toe in colored powder with smiles a mile wide paints a pretty enticing picture for school fundraising! Rainbow runs are great fundraising vehicles because a fun run where you get to get messy gets people involved!

Color Fun Run Race Kits For a School Fundraiser

how to organize a color fun run fundraiser

One way to add interest to your color fun run for charity is to provide participants with a Race Kit. If you have ever participated in a fun run you are familiar with the typical fun run accessories – usually a t-shirt, maybe lots of coupons for different businesses and perhaps some other goodies thrown in. So what items should you include in a Fun Run race kit?

What Should Be In Our Race Kits ? How to Organize a Color Fun Run

We believe it is all about the colors and all about inspiration and smiles. Ours include:

  • A t-shirt – A hip design with lots of inspirational words.
  • Individual Powder Packet – everyone’s gotta have some of their own personal shade
  • Sunglasses – to keep the dust out of the eyes – and well just to look cool in general.
  • Inspirational Bracelet – for inspiration as well as the fashion statement.
  • Temporary Tattoos – Fun and Inspiration and who doesn’t want to be tatted up temporarily.

How to Put Together a Fun Run Fundraiser

how to organize a color fun run

So, how to organize a fun run?

We like to keep ours bright and colorful with items you will need for your race as well as just some fun toys. If the fun run accessories are fun, it conveys that the race is going to be fun and it also can be used as an incentive to get people signed up. You can provide a set of fun run gears to the early bird sign ups or you can charge more for the race registration if it includes a race kit.

The list of items to add to your own fun run gears are endless but the most important thing to keep in mind is to choose items that are going to appeal to the community. The second most important thing to remember is to choose items that are low cost and/or free so you aren’t increasing the costs too much. Items such as t-shirts will likely be the most costly but a t-shirt also provides great marketing for your event next year. As the participants wear your shirt throughout the year they are providing advertising for you and it keep them looking forward to the next one!

Get Locals Involved When You Host a Fun Run | Fundraising Ideas

Get Free Stuff! Ask the local business community for donations. The local dollar store may be willing to donate bandannas or candy. The local ice cream store might give you coupons for free ice cream. Maybe the grocery store or sports store would give you granola bars or power bars. Don’t overlook your school community, you never know what connections parents may have. Perhaps someone knows a sports drink rep or a someone who owns a promotional company that would be happy to donate samples.

Organizing A Fun Run – Earn More With Sponsorships

Organizing A Fun Run – Earn More With Sponsorships

Obtaining sponsorships from local businesses is the key to having a successful fun run fundraising campaign. Event sponsors can give you the resources you need to take your event to the next level. When you are first starting out, the thought of asking for sponsorships can be overwhelming.

You aren’t sure who to ask, how to ask and what to offer in return. Here is a quick guide to help you create a plan for obtaining sponsorships for a Color Fun Run.

Coordinate Your Requests and Get Organized | Color Fun Run Fundraiser

Put together a small group to make a list of what types of donated goods, services and monetary donations you will need for their event. Include everything from water bottles to start/finish line banners, to color powder. Be sure to attach a monetary value to goods and services so you know what it is you are asking for. Here is just a partial list of possible goods and services that could be donated:

  • Water Bottles
  • Sports Drinks
  • Power Bars
  • Start and Finish Line Banners
  • Color Powder for Color Stations
  • Color Packets for a Color Toss and to sell as an additional fundraiser
  • DJ Services
  • Prizes for fundraising – think of everything from Free Ice Cream coupons, Movie Passes, Pizza to larger prizes like Mall gift certificates, Smart TV, Headphones. Think about the community and what will incentivize them to raise money.

color run ideas

Create a Targeted Market

Now that you know what you need, mine your organizations personal connections as well as businesses that members of your organization frequent. The old adage “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” definitely comes into play when asking for sponsorships.

Make a list of local businesses that members of your fundraising committee have a connection with, your organization has a relationship with or the school or organizations families frequent. These are the best places to start and perhaps where you will have the most success, since odds are they know someone personally who attends your school and/or their customers attend the same school so someone they know will benefit directly from their donation. You can expand your reach from there.

Craft a Donation Letter

color run fundraiserYou will need to write a donation letter outlining what you are asking for. Remember be specific and put your best foot forward. Make sure it is written on the school or organization’s letter head. Introduce yourself and be specific about what you are contacting them for. Explain the organization’s mission, specifically what you are raising for funds for and how much in total you will need. Ask them specifically what you want – would you be interested in sponsoring a XYZ at $$$$.

Also give them alternatives – a cash donation, gift cards you can use as prizes, services you may require for the next event, etc., You may have to craft a general outline letter and then tailor it for each business depending upon what you are asking for. Make sure to outline what you are offering in exchange for their sponsorship. Let them know how many students you have and how many local families will see their name.

Tell them you will be mentioning them in your social media posts (be sure to tag them), on the website, in flyers, and in the email blasts about the event and you will be encouraging your followers to frequent their business.

Find the Right Fit and Make it Easy for Them to Say Yes!

Now it is time to divide and conquer. Organize committee members and divide up you list of businesses. If someone has a business or personal relationship with any of the businesses on the list have that person approach the business. Businesses do get bombarded with emails so sometimes it is more effective visit them in person.

Make sure to time your visit or phone call at a time that is not busy for the business. Always follow up with an email thanking them for their time – even if they said no – it never hurts to maintain a friendly relationship.

fundraising event ideas

Keep Records of Your Donations and Follow Up

Whenever you receive a donation, whether it is large or small, an immediate handwritten thank you note goes a long way. Also be sure to follow up with them after the event thanking them again for their generosity and letting them know what an impact their donation made.

You could also update them on the success on the campaign, “because of business owners like you, we will be building our new playground in the Spring.” You can also provide them with photos of the event and photos/screenshots of when their logo was used and mentions in email blasts, social media etc. So they know what kind of exposure they received from their sponsorship.

Lastly make sure you have a comprehensive list of businesses you contacted – contact name, phone number email and what the end result was, even if it was a no – this will help next year’s group immensely in their fundraising.

Sponsorships Affect Your Bottom Line

You are going to get some “No’s” and that’s ok. But keep at it. Obtaining sponsorships and donations from local businesses not only offsets the costs of putting on the event, and hopefully brings in additional cash donations as well that you can put towards your fundraising goal, it also increases the communities awareness of Color Fun Runs and your cause and can add to increase attendance!

Color Fun Runs | How To Organize a Fun Run

Color Fun Runs | How To Organize a Fun Run

If you are a PTO member, school administrator, coach or teacher you may need to do some fundraising for your school. You may be searching for school fundraising ideas and thinking you want to stage a fundraising event that will get all students, parents and the community at large involved. Fun Runs seem to fit the bill. Fun Runs with COLOR are even better! Colored Powder adds a whole new element to a typical 5K Fundraising Race that gets people involved who may have never even considered running in a 5k before – and for you the more people the more funds! So how do you get on your way to school fundraising with colored powder? We have a few tips for you to get you started.

  1. Pick the event date, time and place
  2. Get permissions needed, plan the course and set fundraising goals
  3. Make a budget
  4. Set fundraising goals and gain sponsors
  5. Promote your event
  6. Day Of Preparation
  7. Clean Up

organizing a color fun runPick your Event Date, Time and Place – Organization of your Fun Run

When choosing the event date for your school fundraiser you will want to pay close attention to what other activities are happening at each individual school, district wide, and in your local community. For example, if the local high schools prom or your town’s annual craft festival is the same weekend you may want to consider another time so you are not conflicting with other events and trying to draw the same people to yours.

Organizing Fun Runs Around Community Activities

Also make sure that you are not sandwiching the Color 5k in between recent fundraising events or similar runs. You may not want to schedule it 2 weeks after the Spring Carnival and 2 weeks before the gift wrap fundraiser as the community may be burned out on fundraising events. You want your Color Fun Run to be a vibrant, exciting, event that everyone in the local community wants to participate in and choosing the right date has a lot to do with it.

Once you have picked your date you will want to consider the place. Hosting a Color Fun Run on school grounds may be a great option for you. It is easy and accessible for students and families and you can draw the attention of your local community as well. City parks and trails may also be an option.

Get Permissions Needed, Plan your Fun Run Course

organizing a fun run

Now that you have decided on the fundraising event date and place, you need to insure you have all the necessary permissions before moving forward. If you are planning the event on your school grounds, you probably just need to get permission from the school principal. If the course will be on public property you will need to get permission and/or obtain any needed permits from your local city/county authorities. If it is on private property you of course need to insure the property owner has granted you permission to use the space for the Color Fun Run.

Once you have all the necessary permissions secured you will want to plan the course. Make sure it is easy to follow. It also works best if your Start and Finish line loop back to the same general area. As you plan your course you will want to consider how many Color Stations you will have and where you will set them up.

Set Your Budget

colored powderYou may already have a general idea of how much you want to make based on what you are raising funds for – but sometimes it works well if you start with a budget – determine what the costs are and then plan out how you are going to cover those costs and raise money for the organization. In terms of a Color Fun Run here are some but not all of the costs you may want to consider:

1. Permits/Fees – are there any permit costs or fees associated with your location?

2. Color Powder Costs – you can determine how much color powder you need based on how many participants you expect and how many color stations you will have. You can find all of the info on how to organize a fun run on our popular blog post.

3. Color Powder Packet Costs -while not 100% necessary a color powder toss to kick off your run certainly creates a festive atmosphere and kicks the fun into high gear.

4. Starting Lines, Finish Lines, Cones, Signage – Are you going to use banners, or rent flags or inflatable arches to designate the start and finish lines. How about cones to mark every course, signage to mark your course or signage to indicate where the run is happening.

5. Other race related expenses –

  • Race Registration Costs – while many choose to take sign ups on their own websites or collecting registration forms, you can also use sites like DoJiggy, Active.com etc. to help with race registration. These sites do make registration easier but there are costs involved.
  • DJ – having great music and announcer really help to create an exciting color vibe, plus a DJ can help direct participants to the start line, finish dance party etc.
  • Portable restrooms – depending on your location and if public restrooms are available.
  • Water for every water stations.

6. Prizes/Incentives for school fundraising goals -If you are going to have your students and/or community participants raise funds – sometimes it helps to offer prizes or incentives based on hitting specific fundraising goals. Sometimes that is as simple as offering a free color powder packet if they hit the first fundraising goal or other race related items like colorful bandanas, backpacks, socks etc. You can also offer gift cards from local businesses. Have a grand prize to the person that raises the most money. Often you are able to get this prize donated so you don’t have an additional cost.

7. Items for Add- On Sales – you may want to think about items that you can sell leading up to the race for a profit. For example – extra color powder packets, bandanas, tattoos, t-shirts.

Fundraising Goals and Sponsorships – Organizing a Fun Run

fun fundraisers for schoolsOnce you have determined the costs, determine what your fundraising goal is and how you are going to achieve it. There is a large variety of fundraising options at a Color 5k.

  1. Registration Fees – set a registration fee for the Color Fun Run. Check to see what other races in the area are charging so you don’t price yourself out of the market and also keep in mind what you think the community is willing to pay to participate.
  2. Color Run Race Kits and /T-shirts – sometimes you can charge a higher registration fee if the registration fee includes a t-shirt or goody bag. Or you can offer different levels of registration. For example – Race registration only is X $’s, Race registration with a t-shirt is XX $’s, Race registration with a t-shirt and goody bag is XXX $’s.
  3. Sponsors – Obtaining sponsorships from local businesses is the key to having a successful fundraising campaign. You can ask local business to sponsor the whole race or sponsor an individual color station, the start line, the finish line, a water station, the color powder packets etc.
  4. Food Vendors – another option is to create a fair like atmosphere and have food trucks or other local vendors like face painters at your event. It gives participants more incentive to attend. You can either charge these vendors a small fee for the space and/or ask them to donate a portion of their afternoon sales to your cause.
  5. Add-On Race Product Sales – you can raise additional money by offering race related products for sale on the day of the race. For example, people love the color powder packets to throw on themselves and at other participants – offer those for sale at a profit. Bandanas, sunglasses, t-shirts, gatorade, are all possibilities.

Promote Your Event

Promoting the event is perhaps the most important aspect. You need to get your community EXCITED about attending a color fun run! Make sure to let them know why you are having this event – what you are fundraising for? People are much more likely to rally behind a cause if they know the specifics.

How To Organize A Color Fun Run Promotion

To promote the event you need to start early and you need to promote often.

  1. Start promoting at least 3 months prior. Make sure it is on all of your school calendars, website and social media pages.
  2. Consider having a pep rally to let the entire school know how much fun it is going to be and to plan on attending.
  3. Send flyers home with your students with all of the specifics about the run.
  4. If you have a sign out in front of the school put your event info up for the community at large to see.
  5. If you have a weekly email that goes out to parents – make sure to include it EVERY single week. In the beginning you may be providing basic information – what, when, where, why etc. But each week you can add information to it – perhaps give them an update on why you need the funds – how is it going to benefit their child. Update them on the progress reaching your fundraising goal – perhaps include a goal thermometer in each email. Always make sure to include a link to where they can send up.
  6. Consider working with a fundraising website that will help you with registration and allow you to send out emails to relatives and friends across the country who may not be able to attend but would love to donate to your school. There are many options out there. Dojiggy and Active are a few that people have found helpful.
  7. Post on social media weekly in the beginning. As you get closer you may want to post more often.
  8. Ask you sponsors if they will promote it for you. Will they hand out flyers, allow you to put up a poster, put the event on their social media and/or website.
  9. Contact you neighboring schools and let them know about your Color 5k. For example if you are an elementary school – you may want to let the local middle school and high school know about the event so they can promote it to their student population.

What to Do on the Day of your Event

color fun run for charity

You have planned and planned and planned and now it is finally here! Now you just have to set up and start your party! One little trick is to plan extra time for set up. If you think it is going to take 2 hours to set up the course, prepare registration area, start and finish lines, water stations, vendors etc. – then allow 3 hours. You won’t be rushed and if you have any surprises along the way you will have time to deal with them. The same goes for all volunteers – if you think they need to arrive at 8:30, tell them to arrive at 8:00. That way you will insure that everyone is arrives on time. Make sure to prepare a detailed checklist of everything that needs to be done on race day. Share it with other planners and put them in charge of sections.

After Your Race To-Do List

school fundraising ideas

The race is over and hopefully it was a huge success! One thing that often gets forgotten about in the planning stages is the clean-up. Make sure you have a dedicated team of volunteers for the race clean- up. Breaking everything down and making sure the area is as clean as when you arrived takes just as much time as the set up.

  1. Make sure to have a dedicated volunteer team in place for cleaning up and break down.
  2. Walk the race course and check the area for trash.
  3. Blow away or hose away any color powder residue that may be left.
  4. Have any vendors check in with you before they leave so you can insure that they have left their area clean.
  5. Don’t forget to say “Thank You!” We suggest sending an email and publicly acknowledging sponsors and volunteers on your website and social media channels. Send an email to all participants and thank them for attending. You may want to mention whether or not you achieved your goal – people feel good when they can be a part of something positive! Finally, don’t forget to thank any local police, fire, city or school officials that may have been of service to you during your event.
  6. Take note of what went well, what didn’t go well, and what you would like to change for next year’s event. Make sure to have a dedicated volunteer team in place for cleaning up and break down.

How to Throw Color Powder at a Fun Run

If you are organizing your fist Color Fun Run you may be wondering just how do you get all that vibrant colors on your runners? First you need to understand the basics of how a fun run is set up. Maybe you’re wondering just what is a color run?

Color Stations

what is a color run

Generally you will have sections of your race that participants run through and they are showered in colors. These sections are usually called Color Stations. Most 5ks and other related events have from 3 to 5 stations set up throughout the course. Each station usually consists of one shade. You may have a Yellow, Blue, Teal, and a Pink Station.

If you like you can have balloons, flags or fun signs along the course right before the station, letting runners know they are coming up on the Pink Stations for example.

At each station you will have volunteers with the designated shade on either side. Depending on the size of your fun run you will need two to six volunteers. This way you’ll be able to throw colored powder on runners from each side and if you have large groups coming through at the same time with two to three volunteers spaced out on each side of your course you will be able to cover the most people.

wholesale color powder

Most orders are in 25lb bags. We recommend transferring the wholesale color powder to 5 gallon buckets. One 25lb bag fits easily inside a 5 gallon bucket and it is just easier to handle in a rigid container like bucket. Here are some fun run ideas you might want to check out!

The two most popular ways to throw colored powder on your runners is to use either dixie cups or squeeze bottles.

If you use dixie cups, we recommend the small bathroom size – they are approximately 3 ounces.

They are easy to use – just scoop up some with the dixie cup and throw it on the race participants as they run by you. You only need a couple of dixie cups per volunteer – but always have some extra on hand for each team.

Squeeze bottles are our customers top choice for dispensing the colored powders.

Squeeze bottles are easy to use – just point and squeeze. Our customers report that they feel they can aim better and they don’t waste as much holi color powder. We recommend that each volunteer throwing powdered chalk is armed with 2 squeeze bottles. Throughout the 5k race you will have breaks in runners and your volunteers will have time to refill their bottles.

We’ve put together a quick video for you that details how to set up your stations and how to use dixie cups and squeeze bottles for a run or for your color war powder.
